Lira

20 Dec 2011 09:41

I know we probably do not watch the Lira price at present but just checked it and was amazed to see it trading at 2.96 to the pound. Has been on the rise for the last few days and lets hope it continues the trend until holiday time again.

Just checked M & Spencer who are giving nearly 2.83. A rise of 5 lira since last friday.

Would nearly be tempted to take a plunge on this if it stayed the same for a few days. Even a few hundreds worth

Travelex are currently offering 2.87

Currently trading on the currency markets at the highest rate it has been all year.

This thread is mirroring my thoughts, just purchased some YTL as part of Maureens Chrissy pressie, got 2.80 no problem on the High Street.

The exchange rate at the moment is higher than anything I have known in my 4 years of Icmeler and must admit I am tempted to start accumulating for next year.

Do any more finacially astute members than me, have any thoughts on where it may go ?

Thanks & Merry Christmas to everyone,

Pete.

not an expert or anything but checking back to the start of the year it seems to be on an upward trend from about 2.40 in January to the current 2.96 now. Anything could happen I admit but I for one am keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps going the right way.

Would not do any harm anyway taking a punt at a few hundred now and hope it still keeps rising. If it drops at least I would still have a few quid at decent rate.

I'm afraid that it's all a gamble. There is no way of knowing which way it will go. I'm afraid it's a case of buy it and be happy with the deal you got. It should be noted that it is unlikely to go above 3TL per 1£ as that is the tipping point at which the state bank/government usually step in and force the rate back down.

Good point David, seen it done a few times now, its the gamble you take.

My Dad just text me to tell me that the lira is well up. I said the same as you guys, I think I may purchase some right now and in Jan & Feb so that I have a good head start for June. :D

Is there a limit to the amount of lira that I can take into Turkey

I am thinking of buying some more lira at these rates. I bought some when it was 2.76 which I thought was a good rate

Re: Lira

Think on balance buying in UK at about 2.85 at the moment is a good idea.

More chance of falling to 2.65 rather than climbing to 3.05 seems to be the consensus.

Had an average of 2.70 last September, so 2.85 is bird in the hand really

It was 2.85 at Asda today

Re: Lira

I've been keeping my eye on it since I got back last month.

I've still got some YTL that I bought in the summer at 2.72 but as soon as I can after Christmas and the New Year expenses are out of the way I shall be buying a few hundred for when I go in March.

If it goes up after that I'll not be fussed, it's the chance you take and on only a couple of hundred I won't lose sleep. :-)

Think M & S are the best at the moment as I have compared them to TC and Thomson.

http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com is a good website for checking the exchange rate as it searches 23 major online foreign currency bureaux in seconds, including M&S.

With most of them they're delivered free if over a certain amount so there are no charges at all. When ordering online though I only use a company that delivers quickly, usually next day. As things are now you never know which company is going to go bust next. I know you're covered if you order with a credit card but you then get charged so I prefer to order and try for a quick delivery with no charges. It's better to be safe than sorry. Today's rate with ice is 2.877, a company that we have used and would use again. In the future, things should improve with regard to charges (hopefully) as the government are trying to put a stop to some of these charges. :)

Also, when checking the rates on other websites double check that it is the tourist rate and not the business rate that is given, one wbsite I can think of giving the business rate is http://www.xe.com/

Finally decided to get some lira as the rates are just sooo good. I had bought £300 about 8 weeks at 2.76 which I thought was good. Today I got another £300 this time at 2.86. SAGA are giving amongst the best rates, with free delivery and the minimum order for no fees is only £300, most places charge about £5 with orders under £500

Can the rate go higher???????
