Visiting Ephesus and Pamukkale in July - too hot?

27 Jun 2011 17:35

In all the times I've visited Turkey, I've always wanted to do the Ephesus and Pamukkale trip but never got round to it. We decided not to go in May as we were only over for a week, and planned instead to do it in our 2 week break in July. However, I'm now wondering if that's such a good idea given the heat in July, and it might be better to wait til we (hopefully) return in September.

Has anyone been at this time of year? Was it ok or just a bit too darn hot?

:)

We did it August two years ago and it was fantastic.

The coach is airconditioned.

The main walk around Ephesus is the hot part, 1 Wear Sun Cream, 2 Wear a hat/cap, 3 Take plenty of water in with you as once through the gates there is nowhere to buy any.

We went through 6 litres between four of us during the three hours on site.

The walk up Pamukkale is lovely on day two, you start in the mornng before the crowds get there and before it gets too hot, also on the walk up you need to remove your shoes part of the way so not to damage the calcium deposits which are lovely and cool. At the top is the Cleopatra's pool, it costs extra to swim there but it is so worth it.

Would I do it again, yes, would I do it again in August, yes

We also did it in August. It was very hot, but as Dave says it is worth every minute of it. Be very careful whilst in the sun and take note of everything that Dave has suggested. There is something very special about Ephesus and it took us about fifteen years before we did it, as we felt that the children were just that little bit young to be sitting on a bus for four hours or so. Now that both birds have flown the nest it is much easier to visit these kind of places. Four weeks to go before we visit again, can't wait.

I did it in August and VERY VERY hot - didnt bother me so much but my mam said she wouldnt go this time of year again as spoilt it for her... (also not sure if still the same, but just in case, if you are animal lovers, there were a few very sad dehydrated & ill looking dogs (due to the extreme heat) wandering around Ephesus and really put a dampner on our day :? )

i would wait till September if you are coming back. It will be very hot in July and there is very little shelter from the sun

Hi, I went last year in August with 8 others, it was far too hot! I lost the will to live half way round as it was too hot, no shade anywhere. Would love to go again at a time when it is bearable to walk round and enjoy.

We went in early Oct and it was great but still hot, our guide told us that in the very hot months(July and August) they sometimes had to cut the trip round the ruins in half or most of the tourists would pass out from the heat. It would be a shame to miss any of this beautifull place so would suggust the later holiday if you can. Well worth the wait 8) 8) 8)
