Urgh! Mossies! Take something with you!

29 May 2011 13:12

Hiya

Just back from a week, with a bit of a tan and over 40 mossie bites. So, thought I'd post a warning to take some repellant with you if you're heading out there soon. All the years I've been going to Icmeler, I've never had a single bite from anything, this year, don't know what's different, but I've seen so many people covered in lots of bites and all suffering from the awful itching and scratching. The ants are a bit on the hungry side too, I have a few of these to add to the collection! Sadly, I'm someone who blisters with mossie bites, so I'm looking like I have some terrible disease  .

So, if you're thinking whether to take a plug in or not - take one, it's horrible having lots of these things all over!

Thanks for the warning - mossies are probably worse coz of the wet weather recently. We go 11th June so will take extra bottle Autan with us. We always spray apartment well with Raid before we go out in the evening once everything locked up. Hope your bites clear up soon

I got bitten loads as well, even with Autan on, they were everywhere the little buggers.

Do you take the Raid with you or can you get it over there something I've never looked for over there as never had a problem, we go in August so never see any clouds never mind rain. Rather be on the safe side though.

Hi - we buy the Raid over there - most of the supermarkets sell it. We go June & Sept and always use it. Better safe than sorry!

If you are unfortunate to get bit cut a lemon or lime in halve & rub it on the bite amazingly stops the itching .Just back from Egypt & was bitten loads of times & one of the locals gave me this advice . Hope it works for turkish mozzies . as they might be immuned to turkey Lemon Balm

i'm like a magnet to mossies, hate them so much. went to corfu last year and mossies where rampant, but we had bought repelant off amazon its called Repel 100, never got bit once. Only problem was it's really strong smell, but it works. Taking some with me to icmeler this year, so at least you'll smell me coming....lol

Yuk I hate them - I'm another to get feasted on alive! Found these bands noticed them on a TC flight back from a recent holiday and was able to pick them up in UK in a chemist. They are called XPEL, thin rubber bands supposed to repel mosquitos and insects, they smell like lemon drops and contain deet. Here's hoping they work will keep you informed !

We are just back after 10days of bliss and without any bites.
3 golden rules for the blighters
Take antihistamines a week before you go then 1aday whilst your there.
Plug in mossie plug every day.
Apply skin so soft before dusk.

Use anything with DEET in it. DEET 50 (50% solution) can be applied directly to the skin, DEET 100 (100% solution applied to clothing). You can get it from tesco £4.95(own make) and from Milletts £6.99. It is what the military use and is the best. I am also a magnet and don.t get a bite since I started using this.

Both of my daughters and I have to be careful because we are mozzie magnets. I think my daughters must be allergic as well, as when they have a bite, it is the size of a 50p piece (no exaggeration!!) and looks inflamed.

They have to use their repellent before going out and then once more while out and if its a late night they'll have to spray a third time. Even the jungle strength only lasts for about three hours. We find that the repellent spray we buy in Icmeler gives more protection so always buy it whilst we're there and buy an extra one to bring home ready for the next time.

The local lemon cologne helps a little if we're bitten but what we've found that helps is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. It's the only thing that we've found that does a good job at reducing the itch. We normally buy it in Duty Free on the way out but this year we've already bought it on ebay, which was cheaper than Duty Free. It can be used for a number of other uses as well so is a handy item to take with you.

As we've always had this problem even in Icmeler I really hope that the council have it under control soon. As for the ants we were told in the past to keep areas dry, eg to dry the areas around the sink as the moisture attracts the ants. Don't know if this is the reason why but we haven't had a problem with ants since doing this.
