Got a text from my daughter this morning. One of her college mates is off to Turkey soon and said she has to get a set of jags costing £105 as Turkey is now a high risk rabies area. Can anyone shed any light on this. Don't want to scare anyone but I think it's better to know these things.

If i remember rightly the immunisation is not pleasant as you get a series of injections in the tummy. may consider it as I dont mind injections at all, cant see the rest of my family having it though!

NHS website simply says:

Immunisations
Confirm primary courses and boosters are up to date as recommended for life in Britain - including vaccines given to special groups because of risk exposure or complications (e.g. hepatitis B for health care workers, influenza and pneumococcal vaccines for the elderly).
Courses or boosters usually advised: hepatitis A; diphtheria; tetanus.
Vaccines sometimes advised: typhoid; hepatitis B; rabies.
No vaccine certificate required.

had them the first time we visited turkey in1993 not a pleasent experience,never bothered since

We dont get them either , mate was a bit ill with his jag

£105 to get the jags, im sure he was about half that he went too Barbados

Don't think i'll get them. Been to Icmeler a good few times and not bothered before. Just dont get too close to the animals.

been to turkey about 23 times now
not just icmeler been all over turkey even in the proper turkish cities and never had an injection

£105 just checked today wth my mate he got them free, I really dont think theres much need for them, my dad never got them either over 70 and fighting cancer,

The information we were given is that if you go to 'tourist' areas you have a choice whether to have them or not as they are not essential. If you go to other areas it is definitely recommended that you have them, especially against TB if you are 21 or younger. This is because the immunisation programme in schools against TB was stopped a few years ago and so this age group is not covered.

Its just personal choice. If I was venturing further afield I would definitely have them as taking the risk is like playing Russian Roulette, just because you didn't catch anything last time doesn't mean next time you'll be so lucky. If you're only in tourist areas where the risk is very low why bombard your body with all the injections and risk all the side effects.
