Hi
Does anyone know what those extremely large insects are that fly around that look deadly? One flew in my babies pram last year and scared us half to death.

I don't know but I accidently laid on one on my sunbed on beach last year and omg talk about burn

I react to insect bites as it is... so you can imagine what I was like! Anyway with help from the locals and hubby, the sting was took out and it eventully stopped burning.
2 years ago i had a reaction to a mossy, had a foot like an elephant! couldn't walk for two days or more. Doctors put me on antibiotics so couldn't drink, but that didn't last long after 1 day lol, after all I was on holiday! Touch wood ever since I have used that lemon spray you can buy haven't been bit since

Hi Delmar
One of the great big things got me last year and boy did it hurt. I was concerned as I also react to mozzie bites. My doctor had recommended that I took antihistamine tablets with me so I took some after I had been stung. I had a huge red patch which spread to about a 6" diameter but the antihistamine tablets seemed to help. It took a good couple of months for the red patch to completely disappear.
I will be taking some antihistamine with me again this year and would suggest that you do too!!

I think they are called Hunting Wasps or Spider Wasps, the following is a description:-
Most spider wasps are black, metallic blue, or reddish and measure from 1 to 5 cm (0.4 to 2.0 in) long. The wings range from clear to smoky-gray or bright red-orange in color. Their extraordinarily long hind legs distinguish spider wasps from other wasps. Spider wasps are usually seen walking on barren ground or in tangled undergrowth searching for prey.

I was under the impression that the one that 'got' me had the markings of a normal wasp but was super sized - I would say 2 inches. I saw it flying away just before the pain hit me. There were a number of them flying about and as for time of year it was September. It left the sting in and a friend managed to remove it (fortunately she had long nails).
All in all not an experience I would like to repeat.

Fortunatly I have not come across them. They sound awful. We go to
Icmeler in June so maybe they aren't about then. I did get stung by a jelly fish and rubbed on some of the Rose Cream we had bought. It worked a treat.

The quickest treatment for a jelly fish sting is vinegar but the best cure is to rinse the area in the hottest water you can stand (be careful not to scald yourself) the best temp is over 122F (50C) as the heat will kill the venom.

One of them stung my friend last year, she had a red mark about 3" big and was there for weeks afterwards. I tried to squeeze the sting out but couldn't. I still dont thinks it gone proper as she's still got a mark!!
Isn't a hornet the same as a wasp

This topic brought back memories of our honeymoon many years ago, every time our barmen saw one of the huge wasp/hornet things, whatever they are, he shouted DANGER whilst brandishing a swatter

We till say the same every time we see one

Thanks for all your replies.
I too got stung in the Dom Rep whilst out on a buggy ride. I didn't see it and thought I was burning my leg on the metal frame of the buggy as the weather was so hot. It turned out to be a big wasp type thing. It felt like someone was burning me with a cigarette. My leg had a huge red circular patch on it too approx same size as yours Patsiej. Maybe the stinging buggers are related in Turkey and Dom Rep. I know I never want to be stung by one again.

sylvia, I think you might have set yourself up for some 'stinging' replies
We have never seen so many wasps as we did last year in September when they were dying off and including ourselves, so many folk stung.

This is a hunting or spider wasp.
