I landed at 5pm Friday and I have yet to see a customs official stop anyone and I suppose you could call me a frequent flyer.
It is also very rare to even see one.
Maybe someone tipped them off you were coming Margaret

Hi all
We came back at the beginning of july and same as admin I have yet to see a customs official. I was really annoyed because I could have brought more cigarettes home!!!
We have only been stopped once and that was at liverpool, they were pulling every flight in and I have never seen so many fags in my life, they were all piled up on pallets in the corner. We only had 1000 between 4 of us 2 adults and 2 kids but they took them all off us, best thing was my son had a box of flares which one of our turkish friends had given him and they said they were ok and we could keep them

Only time we've ever seen a turkey flight stopped was about 2 years ago at East Midlands .....

I doubt if SOMEONE tipped them off because I did not write the complete story. We were pulled and warned BUT they let us keep the cigs and told don't ever do it again. I i did not write it at first because I did not want to encourage or discourage others. I feel now we have been clocked I personally would not dare. By the way there were nine officers I spotted them while we were waiting for our luggage. Sod's Law.

There were notices up in the duty free shop at the new
Dalaman airport stating that the limit is 1000 cigarettes per person. Lots of people bought this many and walked through customs at Manchester with them clearly showing through the transparent duty free bags. However, I think its risky as I believe the legal limit is still only 200.

I checked out the glasgow airport webiste regarding the allowances a while back and I was confused as it said that you can take 200 cigarettes into turkey but there is a note about being able to purchase a further 400 at duty free - not sure if this is outbound or return but it said this was the information taken from the turkish embassy information so I copied the place they said they got it from might be american site not not sure if can put the link onto here but if I can then I'll add it later. So it looks like you maybe allowed 600????????
Am going to try and get confirmation from somewhere tried to contact glasgow airport but it ain't easy by email so will go and try again.

nope it is 200 and I have the Turkish government handbook in front of me now and it states that you are allowed only 200 smokes in but the UK government says 200 in and in fact the guidlines for both are exactly the same though the Turkish officials of course are a little more relaxed about it
