local drinks

Hi,
I do like efes,but can only drink a couple,( do like to stay out and drink and drink and drink)
does anyone know any other local drinks (beer or spirits)
and roughly what prices are? Thanks in advance.

the local vodka istanblue is totally fine - i usually hate local spirits i.e. in spain, but i have no problems with the local spirits. I've heard the local gin is ok as well. Depends where you are drinking but you can expect to pay about 8 lira for a vodka and mixer, well based on last years prices anyway

oh and there's always raki an aniseed flavoured spirit - some people drink with mixers, other just with water - can't help with the price though cos I don't drink it - too strong for me

The brandys ok as well, i've never found a Bacardi substitute though.

turkish spirits are quite expensive
just about the same price as you would pay here
also the imports are expensive too
someone told me it was all to do with government tax
raki isnt nice, tastes like medicine
i wouldnt recommend it and its very strong

I can't drink too much Efes either, I find it rather gassy so limit myself to one or two a day - but you can get Efes light which is very nice and not nearly so gassy, you can get it in most bars/restaurants.

Personally I tend to stick to the local vodka (my favourite is Istanblue) or Turkish wine which is delicious, and I never touch the Raki.... it's true what Dave says!!!

I remember when we first went to Turkey at the end of the meal you always got a tumbler full of raki (those were the days).You did`nt get these thimbles of cough medicine you seem to get nowdays

I find beer/lager bags me up too much aswell i dont mind the odd one in the day you cant beat an ice cold beer sometimes although vodka is my tipple i was a bit worried about the spirits over there but taking a tip from you good folks i think im gonna try the istanblue...cheers

Yeah, unitedman57 - I remember those fab days (and nights) when the raki flowed free. A good tumblerful after every meal, and then 5 more at your hotel bar. You only needed to say 'Merhaba' to a local barman and you'd find yourself sloshing the milky nectar around in your tumbler - most of which I don't think were ever charged for. Haven't been for 12/13 years, and I hadn't realised it's changed so much. Good old Icmeler! I wonder if the beach guy (Apple Pie, Cheese Pie, Cherry Pie!) is still going? I'm sorry to hear the train no longer runs. We used to call it the 'Foffo Toot' cause every time we tried to catch it, it blew its whistle and effed off just as we caught up. Ah, happy days indeed. After many years of travelling to exotic (and some not so exotic!!) destinations worldwide, Icmeler remains the only place that I have ever revisited. I look forward to my 5th trip to Turkey and 4th to Icmeler on June 14th.

I hope to see some of you there. Turkiye for the World Cup!

you will notice loads of changes - we have been 12 times (the last one earlier this May) unfortunately the apple pie man is no longer there & the Aran Man too, but the place is still fantastic and we are sure you will enjoy lots..

I like pernod ,but i now have this vision in my head of a thimble of cough mixture and water still as the ole saying goes dont knock it till you've tried it and im sure i will and will be sure to heed your advice and drink it when the sun goes down

D'oh! Of course they aren't! Here's me looking forward to having a second team to support, and they aren't in the finals! Being originally from Dublin, I'm already gutted that the Republic of Ireland got cheated out by the French. AAAAARGH!

Never mind - apart from the Ingerlaaand games, I'll just have to make do with supporting every team that are playing against Greece and Germany (that should keep me going for the fortnight!!)

Incidentally (and back to the original subject of this thread), if anyone wakes up from a raki session wondering why they feel as if they've been mauled by a wild animal - they have. Raki translates to..... Lions Milk

just a thought if you do get mullered on raki when you get up in the morning do not have a drink of water as you will be back in the land of wobbly bob.beware the sleeping lion awaits to bite you again in the morning
