Curries etc.

20 Apr 2010 13:31

Volcanos and Acts of God permitting we are starting our 2nd Icmeler holiday on 17th May.

Last September we had 2 excellent curries in the Taj Mahal which I understand is no more. Are there any others in Icmeler so we can get our weekly Indian fix ?

Also I fancy the idea of walking round the bay to Marmaris which I guess would take a good 2 / 3 hours and catching a water taxi back. Is there a path or do we need to walk on the road ? - a couple of recommended watering stops on the way round seems a good idea too !

Many Thanks for your help folks.

Pete & Maureen. :D :D

I read that the Chill Bar is now Hakan's Tandoori Sizzler. They are Hakan and Levent of the Famous Old Kitchen so I would imagine the food to be very good. Still miss the Kitchen.

The Masala opposite the Loveboat also does Indian meals, some people love this place and others hate it so should be called the Marmite restaurant.

The curries that were served in the Taj Mahal in Icmeler were never cooked there.

They were brought in from Marmaris and just warmed up in a small "kitchen" below the Baydu apartment right next door to the toilet.

I don't mind saying this now that the council will not allow a restaurant to open there.

I will even now go on further to say that the curries were not even cooked in the restaurant in Marmaris as they are made in a factory and simply re heated.

They are also sold to supermarkets the way we get them at home.

Hakan and Levent were approached by the company that makes these and asked would they like to buy them and just re heat in their place which they refused and said they will cook from scratch.

I do have a long list of the places that buy from this company and is a bit of an eye opener

WOW, thats a bit of an eye opener. Is this general practise do you think in the local restaurants?? Or a curry thing.
I luuurrvv my curries, but was always warned off going for a curry whilst abroad....come to think of it, I dont think we've 'ever' had a curry whilst on holiday
But these guys sound ok though. ??

Not general practise and Icmeler is famous for its fresh food

Thanks Admin, you certainly live and learn. I dont live anywhere near the curry capitals of England, but I do enjoy them especially a Chicken Tikka Vindaloo so perhaps my taste buds are shattered   .

The meals we had at the Taj Mahal where nice and I didnt suffer afterwards. but gratefull for the info. Im looking forwrd to the Tandori Sizzler next month now. Is this the new place where the meetings are being held, near the ICR offices ? handy as we are staying at Vinces which is just round the corner if I remember right.

HI Viking Pete

You can walk from Icmeler to Marmaris very easily - no need to go along the road. The path follows the sea all the way from Icmeler to Marmaris.

It's a lovely walk and there are plenty of watering holes along the way. Two to three hours sounds about right depending on how many stops you make.

Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks Patsiej, Sounds perfect to me , only there for a week in May, but that walk is my holiday mission, best not stop in all the watering holes then as I ll not make Marmaris    or be sea sick on the way back.

Mind you sounds like an all day job to me !

Correct on both counts - it's the old Chill Bar. Vince's is only a couple of minutes away

We usually steer away from Chinese, Indian, etc on holiday as we prefer to try the local dishes instead, but when daughter and I were in Icmeler last October, she really fancied a curry and wanted to try the Taj Mahal, so we did, and I have to say it wasn't that bad. Maybe not the best curry I've ever had, but it was ok. Like I say though, I'd rather eat Turkish food when I'm in Turkey anyway.

Have to say I'm not surprised to hear this. Only went to Taj Mahal once and though it overpriced for what you got and the curry wasn't that good. Never went back.

I absolutely love Curry and am shocked that somewhere in Icmeler would do this, the food is always so fresh.

After eating there once before, I wasn't that impressed, but couldn't tell it was premade shite.

I agree with the poster who said that Massala was a nice curry, I was impressed with the one I had there last year, and the service was spot on. The deep fried ice cream was the best.

That makes perfect sense. 2 years ago me and my girlfriend were in Içmeler and we had thunderstorms in the evening. Lightening hit the powerstation on the top of the hill and set it on fire and cut the electric to Içmeler. Our hotel was in darkness and no food was being served so we had a walk to the Taj Mahal and ordered 2 curries (1st time we had been). We had a little wait while the power came back on but the curries arrived on our table REALLY fast. Like vikingpete my favourite curry is a chicken tikka vindaloo so I had opted for the chicken vindaloo from the menu. I took one mouthful and said to my girlfriend "This tastes exactly the same as what we get from Morrisons as a ready meal". We never ate there again.

But looking forward to being back in Içmeler in July and will try the recommendations list. You simply cant beat a good curry. The hotter the better
