Hi Dave

you would be best to check with your bank as it could depend on what type of account you have
I have a mastercard debit card on my account and if I chose to pay the optional fee I get the same protection as a mastercard credit card
Hope this helps

hi dave you get the same protection . a couple of years ago the company i booked with went to the wall and because i had paid by debit rather than credit card i recieved my refund 3 or 4 months before my friends who booked by credit card, the process was simple i sent my receipt and copy bank statements and that was that. Hope this doesn't happen to you but now i always use a debit rather than credit card. Enjoy your holiday :D

I don't think you're covered by paying for flights with a credit card unless you're buying the flights directly off the airline, not a travel agent. The travel agent should have their own cover such as atol / abta etc.

Could be wrong though

Your do not have the same cover with a debitcard as you do with a creditcard should a company go bust.
If you book with a creditcard and the worst happens then you will get your money back within a short time, with a debit card you must claim back via ATOL/ABTA. I know from my own experience, we paid with debitcard for our 2010 holiday and when goldtrail went bust I was straight on the case, only to be told that I would have to make my claim through ATOL, there is a clause with Visa concerning Debitcard payments but this is only implimented at the banks discretion ( i think they refund you and then they take action to reclaim it ).ALWAYS USE A CREDIT CARD IF AVAILABLE>

We were also caught up in the Goldtrail saga - we did buy with a credit card, not debit card, and they're just not interested as cover is available from whoever the booking was placed with through Atol.

We are still waiting for our money back from Atol so it didn't help one bit using a credit card.
